Popular Hardwood Floor Species

Red Oak: This is a highly popular, sought-after type of material. Is wonderfully resistant to wear and it also has a high shock resistance. There are over 200 subspecies that provide a wide variety of grain patterns and color variations. Red Oak has a tell-tale smell that most people find appealing.

Birch: Yellow, Paper, and Sweet Birch are just a few subspecies of this wood. It is stiff, hard, and comes in a variety of colors. It also has excellent shock resistance. It’s the Yellow Birch that you usually find in flooring. Is close-grained, heavy, strong, and even!-textured. Colors range from reddish brown to creamy white.

Maple: This is the species of wood that you will usually find in bowling alleys and athletic floors. This is due to it’s incredible strength. It has a nice creamy color, smooth grain pattern, and it stains nicely.

Pine: Here we have a softer but durable wood. It is not as resistant to scrapes and scuffs as other species of wood are.pine can be used for flooring, but it may not be appropriate for all applications. This species has good elasticity and is of medium weight. The properties of pine depend on the density of the annual growth rings. A higher proportion of summerwood makes it heavier.

White Oak: This is harder and more durable than Red Oak and there is a wide array of grain texture and color variance as well. This characteristic of white oak is not as noticeable as it is in Red Oak.

FINISHES AND SHEENS

You need to decide on a finish or sheen  regardless of if you are installing a refinishing. Each one has its pros and cons, but in the end it is ultimately up to you to decide. Which one fits your style?

OIL BASED POLYURETHANE: This finish is the cheapest way to go, and is also easy to apply. It is a popular choice, but it tends to yellow over time. It also has a long drying time. Oil based polyurethane also contains dangerous and high levels of V.O.C.s.

WATER-BASED: This option contains a lower level of V.O.C.s and because of this it is more environmentally friendly. It has a quicker drying time then oil based finishes, and does not tend to yellow over time.

WATER-BASED U.V.: With a caring time of only 2 hours, this finish is more expensive per square foot than other water-based finishes. Still, they are very similar.

HARDWOOD FLOOR SHEENS

The options you see here are similar to those you see when you were buying paint.

MATTE: This option keeps the wood looking natural and is great at catching pet hair and scratches. It will have you believing that sheens don’t exist.

SATIN: This sheen gives you a warm feel with minimal shine. Although it is a bit more difficult to maintain and keep clean than matte sheen, the two are very similar.

SEMI-GLOSS: This sheen is great for older homes that could benefit from reflection. It also makes the floor look “thicker” than mattes or satins.
